Arashiyama Today

Who runs Arashiyama Today?

Arashiyama Today is run by Bag2Gate, a luggage storage and Kansai Airport delivery service in Osaka.

We think busy places like Arashiyama are best seen early, and without a suitcase in tow. This site is our way of helping visitors find the quiet hours. It is free and needs no sign-up.

Are the crowd levels live?

No. Every crowd level on this site is an estimate. It is not a live count, and it does not use phone location data or ticket sales. Real crowds can be very different on the day, for example when a festival, a tour group or a holiday weekend arrives. Use the live cameras to check.

How are the estimates made?

  1. Each spot has a typical crowd curve for an ordinary weekday, hour by hour, on a scale of 0 to 100.
  2. Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese public holidays are 18% higher.
  3. November 10 to December 5 and March 25 to April 10 are 30% higher. October 15 to November 9 and March 15 to March 24 are 10% higher.
  4. Any hour with at least 1 mm of rain forecast, or a 60% or higher chance of rain, is 20% lower.
  5. The all-Arashiyama level is a weighted average of Bamboo Grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, Main shopping street, Tenryu-ji Temple, Sagano Romantic Train station, Nonomiya Shrine. Spots that are closed at that hour are left out.

Where does the weather come from?

Open-Meteo (CC BY 4.0). We fetch a 7-day hourly forecast for Arashiyama every hour. If a fetch fails, the page says when the weather was last updated rather than showing old data as new.

Whose cameras are these?

The live cameras are run by the Kyoto City Tourism Association. We link to them and do not host or record any footage.

How does the site make money?

Links to Bag2Gate go to our own service. We do not use affiliate links at the moment. If we add them, we will say so next to the link and on this page.
